1st Light Festival 2008
The 1st Light Festival is an annual tradition for the Town of Brookline, Massachusetts. Outdoor advertising for the festival was to begin in November and print materials (including streetlight banners, posters, kiosks, and more) were to be installed in 6 different neighborhoods (Brookline Village, Coolidge Corner, JFK Crossing, Putterham Circle, St. Mary's Station, and Washington Sq). The client requested a complete rebranding for the festival, including new signature colors, logo and overall brand consistency across all print pieces. This campaign spanned several months in the latter half of 2008, culminating in the actual festival during the first week of December. These designs were implemented again for the 2009 1st Light Festival.
The client was the Town of Brookline, MA and the agency of record was BU AdLab. Account Executive was Alexis Kinsley and the Head Copywriter was Tessa Kohn. Kenny Chung was lead Art Director for this project. Our work earned us the AdLab 2008-2009 award for "Best Rush Job".
1st Light Festival Street Light Banners
These 60″ by 30″ vinyl banners were the staple of the 2008 1st Light Festival campaign. With a 2 month turnaround (from conception to execution), these posters played a large role in the rebranding of the festival. The Town of Brookline Steering Committee decided to reuse the designs for the 2009 Festival.
1st Light Festival Street Light Banners
The rebranding strategy began with this snowflake icon. The idea was to create some iconography that people would associate with all things related to the 1st Light Festival. The snowflake was designed in Adobe Illustrator and used in all print materials for the campaign.
1st Light Festival Store Front Posters
These posters were displayed in businesses participating in and supporting the 1st Light Festival. The same design was used for the 32″ x 45″ vertical kiosk posters located all across Brookline. These posters Were accompanied by the Event Brochure.
1st Light Festival Event Brochure
These 11″ by 17″ glossy quad-fold brochures served as a comprehensive guide to all events taking place in all six neighborhoods on the night of the festival. One of the major challenges was finding room for all scheduled events and sponsors. These were available to the public in kiosks located in major pedestrian traffic locations, such as the Coolidge Corner T Station.

This 11″ x 21″ full page newspaper ad ran in the Brookline Tab two weeks before the 1st Light Festival in the November 20, 2008 edition. It was featured on the back cover of the paper. The Brookline Tab is a free newspaper available at boxes and businesses around Brookline.
